WE WERE LIARS | E. LOCKHART
Welcome to the beautiful Sinclair family...
Someone once wrote that a novel should deliver a series of small astonishments. I get the same thing spending an hour with you.
Rating: 4.5/5
Genre: YA Fiction, YA Contemporary, Suspense
Astounding. Sophisticated. Bold. The quote fits perfectly to the book, it does contain a series of unforeseeable surprises that may wreck you. I can't possibly list out how many things I like about this book to prevent spoilers, but I'm aware that books like We Were Liars, exist quite less in number. I was lost and found, found and lost.
The Sinclair Family-beautiful, perfect, wealthy, cracked and broken. The family gathers together in their private Beechwood Island each summer. One summer, expected to be just fine like the others, turned the life of Cadence Sinclair upside down. She can't remember what happened. She can't fill up the holes in her memory. All she feels is the migraine pain slicing her brain after the accident.Everyone acts normal with her, doesn't want to push her to remember the incidents preceding and succeeding the accident. Her cousins, the Liars, soothes her. She herself tries to stay normal but can she?
We Were Liars was a gorgeous read. The story flows like water, so smooth that you can't even figure out when you started to float with the storyline. First, this book made my heart flutter in happiness and then shattered it into million pieces. And honestly, I am happy about it, more than happy.
This book made me long for cousins. The way the Liars stayed together through each other's thick and thin, not caring what result it may lead to, is a pleasure to read. Lockhart portrayed a family bonding, internal family drama and its effects on others, the patriarchy running in every family flawlessly beneath the sheath of a summer vacation in island. In addition, the love story between Cadence and Gat (don't worry, not a spoiler) will warm your heart. It is reckless but realistic, understanding but childish, romantic but subtle.
The writing style is modern, precise and picturesque. I felt like the words enchanted me and took me to Beechwood Island where I was watching the Liars, hiding behind a tree. Yes, I was visualizing the lines in the book. I could taste the salt in the air while the Liars were laying on the tiny beach. I could feel the splash of waters when the Liars dived into the sea. I could smell the ice-creams the Liars made. Do you know how rare it is to build such a connection with a book?
The book is narrated by Cadence herself. The development her character is undergone has three stages: before the accident, during the accident and after the accident. You see three layers of her as the story unfolds. Through her narration, the development of the Liars as individual characters and as a part of Sinclair family is breathtaking.
Finally, the Ending! Never saw it coming. You'll just be unable to decide what to feel. A mixture of feelings, all blended. So yes, this is how spending a day with We Were Liars felt.
I think I've already made myself pretty clear that I'm SCREAMING at you to read this book! Please pick this gorgeous soon or you'll never know what you're missing out.
