THE MURDER OF ROGER ACKROYD | AGATHA CHRISTIE
Family or Friends -no one is free of suspicion!
It is odd, when you have a secret belief of your own which you do not wish to acknowledge , the voicing of it by someone else will rouse you to a fury of denial.
Rating: 5/5
Genre: Murder, crime, mystery
"Christie fooled you", this is the ending line of the book and already you all can possibly guess that this one is gonna be super unpredictable, well at least for me, it was. Agatha Christie fooled me with her damned conceptual ingenuity and I found myself cupping my mouth in shock at the climax.
Roger Ackroyd married Mrs. Ferrars, the lady who poisoned her first husband. "A life always calls for a life"-Mrs. Ferrars committed suicide. A handwritten letter from Mrs. Ferrars arrived to Roger Ackroyd by the evening post, a confession of her guilt.
The very evening, Roger Ackroyd was found murdered in his study, the letter, gone! All evidence pointed towards his adopted son, Ralph. Roger's niece, Flora, believing in his innocence, rushed to Hercule Poirot who was living in neighborhood in disguise, enjoying his retirement.
A case to a detective, is like fresh meat to a starving lion. Poirot took the case and he knew that in this family, everyone has their own secrets, carefully guarded.
Why did Mrs. Ferrars commit suicide? Who killed Roger Ackroyd? And, why? Was it really Ralph? What are the secrets of others? What was in the letter that costs poor Ackroyd's life?
The book is divided into 27 titled chapters, each title an insight of what is going to happen. So beautifully organized and written that it's impossible not to keep up your pace. Not for a second I struggled to keep my attention. The book consumed me. I was turning pages after pages, never wanting to pause before I finish it. And when I did, I was awestruck! I didn't see it coming, like ever!
I adore this book. The shocking climax is what I seek in a murder-mystery and The Murder of Roger Ackroyd filled me in. Moreover, I have a soft spot for internal family drama. When I realized that the plot is focused in the murder of the family-head, I just knew it's gotta be intriguing!
The way Christie crafted the grey cells inside Poirot's egg-shaped head, is the proof of utmost imagination. I just can never stop ranting about how she connects the dots at the end. Thanks to Poirot and Christie, a true Queen of Mystery!
Do I recommend? Of course YES!! What are you even waiting for?
